Response to proposed changes to Alberta’s student gender identity, sports and surgery policies

Our Response

The Alberta LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce wishes to address Premier Danielle Smith’s recent gender identity legislation proposal. Simply put, we assert that these actions will cause direct harm for queer and trans children, both in terms of their safety and the long-term psychological impacts that come through denying medically affirming healthcare. We strongly urge the Premier and her administration to consult with medical experts, educators, children’s advocates, and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community before assuming that families can be trusted to accept their children for who they are. Research on homelessness in Canada consistently shows an overrepresentation of 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals among youth. Furthermore, suicide rates among queer youth is equally disproportionate in terms of representation.

Several members have expressed personal concerns and shared stories about growing up queer. Some have positive experiences with supportive family and friends, while others have not been as fortunate. What unites us is the belief that inclusiveness strengthens Alberta. For our Chamber, queer and trans youth are the future entrepreneurs, medical practitioners, teachers, and public servants who contribute to a robust Alberta economy. Economic strength relies on supporting diverse communities. This legislation damages our reputation as an inclusive province, hindering our ability to attract visitors, businesses and families. Therefore, we stand in solidarity with advocacy groups, community leaders, and 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations opposing this legislation.

The Chamber is ready to support advocacy groups opposing this legislation, collaborating closely with our member Skipping Stone to align our efforts with theirs. We encourage Chamber members and allies to reach out for resources or ways to support these advocacy endeavors.
